Jméno Domenico Martinelli je jedním ze synonym pro italskou barokní architekturu severně od Alp. Je architektem barokního Nového Zámku na navrší mezi Lanškrounem a Rudolticemi. První vzdělání získal jako zeměměřič a geometr u svého otce. Po kněžském svěcení, kterého se mu dostalo v jeho rodném městě Lucca v Toskánsku, se Martinelliho zájem záhy obrací k architektuře, kterou vystudoval na prestižní římské Academii di San Luca, kde později působil jako jeden z nejvýznamnějších a velmi uznávaných pedagogů.
Během své profesní dráhy se Martinelli stal tvůrcem projektů pro nejvýznamnější osobnosti své doby (polského krále Jana III. Sobieského, anglického krále Viléma III. Oranžského, německého kurfiřta Johanna Wilhelma Falckého, kurfiřta Lothara Franze von Schönborn z Mohuče a také hraběte Kounitze a knížete Lichtenštejna). Jeho pracovní putování jej zavedlo nejen do rodné Itálie, ale také do Rakouska (Vídeň), Čech, na Moravu, do Polska či Nizozemí. Byl ,,domácím architektem“ hraběte Kounice. Právě ve Vídni se Martinelli dostane ke svému nejdůležitějšímu dílu vytvořenému v letech 1692-1705 – paláci rodu Lichtenštejnů, kde se v současnosti nachází jedna z nejvýznamnějších evropských sbírek barokního umění. První kontakt Martinelliho s Prahou pochází z roku 1692 (Šternberský palác). V Čechách i na Moravě se nacházejí mnohé stopy jeho působení (např. Rousínov, Letonice, Uherský Brod, částečně Valtice). Mnohé stavby na Moravě jsou také úzce spojeny s Martinelliho kontakty se šlechtickým rodem Kouniců. Reprezentativní ukázkou je zde krásný a rozsáhlý zámek ve Slavkově u Brna.
K Martinelliho důležitým současníkům patřili např. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach a Johann Lukas von Hildebrand.
Nový Zámek u Rudoltic pro knížete Lichtenštejna začal být budován zřejmě od roku 1698, ale stavba byla plánována již dříve, zřejmě od roku 1696. Roku 1699 byl položen základní kámen. V roce 1700 podstoupilo pět zdejších rolníků, zvláště majitelé selských statků jeho Jasnosti, tehdejšímu vládnoucímu knížeti Janu Adamu Ondřejovi z Lichtenštejna , na vrcholku mezi Rudolticemi a Lanškrounem ležící pole ze svého vlastnictví na výstavbu zámku, za což je zmíněný kníže tak zvýhodnil, že jim slevil polovinu vykonané roboty a na věčné časy je osvobodil od placení daní. Z této předrealizační fáze pochází vlastnoruční Martinelliho plán Nového Zámku, který je uložený v Lucce. V celém svém díle pracuje Martinelli ještě s klasickým architektonickým řádem pilastrů vybavených řádovými náležitostmi, aby byl zdůrazněn jejich rámující charakter. Sál dostal příčně obdélnou podobu, s předstoupením na pohledové fasádě, a z nárožních věžic se staly vyčleněné nárožní věžové risality se zaoblením v místě schodišť. Zároveň se zaměřoval na detaily, jako okenní šambrány nebo ostění, nadokenní římsy a parapety. Nový Zámek je architektonickým odkazem Martinelliho pro středoevropské prostředí, neboť je jedním z mála děl, kde pracoval na stavbě založené zcela nově, bez starších konstrukcí. Nový Zámek byl nádhernou monumentální stavbou, která v době svého vzniku náležela k tomu nejvýznamnějšímu, co vzniklo na poli zámecké architektury středoevropského významu. Se jménem Martinelliho se spojuje i kostel sv. Jana Křtitele v Žichlínku. Jakékoli doklady skutečného Martinelliho autorství k tomuto kostelu ovšem chybí.
